on-line dating and the single mother

on-line dating and the single mother

Good Morning America published a story about pedophiles targeting single mothers in online dating sites. Chilling. One woman says a man she met and married through just such a service only married her to get to her daughter.
Single parents must always put their children’s safety and welfare above their own needs. Just because a guy makes your toes tingle, don’t forget  your common sense. If something about him makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end, don’t make excuses. Just run like hell. You can apologize later if you have to.
Do a background check. Run his …read more

Need some help pinching pennies? Need a good laugh?

Need some help pinching pennies? Need a good laugh?

Thrifty Mommy posted a link to the Festival of Frugality and there are some great ideas over there. And in case you are feeling tired and overworked and a little underwhelmed with the run up to the Event that is 2008,  you can learn some political wisdom from the feet of an 18 month old in Madame Meow’s essay on the difference between donkeys and elephants over at a Daily Dose of Zen Sarcasm.
I’m out of time, chicks and ducks. Watched my son swim (SWIM!) in the pool after work today and now I’m scrambling. But oh, it was worth …read more

Sex (education) and the single mother

Sex (education) and the single mother

I suppose the hospital is as good a place as any to have a conversation about biological functions with a four year old.
As we were being discharged from the hospital after my son’s recent surgery, I accompanied him to the bathroom. He grabbed his scrotum, pulled it out from his body to make it more visible, and said, “I think that’s where I store my pee, before I go to the bathroom, mama!”
I should have kept my mouth shut.

When they say divorce is bad for the kids, to whom are they referring?

When they say divorce is bad for the kids, to whom are they referring?

Based on my very unscientific knowledge of how divorce affects families, and the children within them, I am beginning to question the data that’s out there descrying divorce and predicting doom and gloom for the children of ‘broken’ homes. I’m wondering… just who are they talking to? Cause from what I’m hearing from you folks here on SoloMother, life is much better for everyone involved, even with the added pressures and struggles of being a single parent. Some of us come from abusive relationships, and some of us were replaced by younger models.

happy birthday Solomother!

happy birthday Solomother!

it was a lovely day. I really do enjoy wandering the market. it’s such a hep part of town. I love watching people at the hip coffee shop, wandering the craft vendors, saying hello to crazy Viktor and all the others I know from days gone by. The fresh produce vendors — sweet pea tendrils and edible flowers, oh my! The flea market, the good deal old furniture and the rip off old furniture. It’s just a place that brings me joy. Today I had coffee with a dear lovely friend of mine, the talented Madame Meow. We had a …read more

Teaching your child consequences

Teaching your child consequences

I often read about single mothers who have somehow ‘lost control’ of their children–their sons, in particular. My kid’s only four, and I hope his father will be an active part of his life as he grows up. I have also gone to great lengths to be sure that there are kind and caring men in his life. Men who will be there for him as he grows up. Men who are not romantically attached to me, and who therefore will not abandon him because things ‘didn’t work out’. I hope that I have laid the groundwork now for the …read more

Apparently, I found the wrong Single Mom Foundation. Who knew there were two?? With the same name, no less?

The Canadians have said it: divorce hits men harder

The Canadians have said it: divorce hits men harder

Thanks to Babylune for this quick link to an article on a study of divorce and depression between the sexes (Divorce Hits Men Harder: StatsCan, at TheStar.com). When I read that men are more prone to depression after a divorce than women, my sarcastic reation was well, it figures. he just lost his free maid, cook, chauffeur, girl Friday, valet, personal assistant, nanny, sex toy, therapist and household manager, of course he’s depressed… he just figured out how much it would cost to hire all those people!
But read closely and you’ll see a different story emerging, one of a species …read more

some advice from the school of hard knocks

some advice from the school of hard knocks

Listen up, single moms. I’ve got a story to tell. It’s got a big lesson right up front: careful what you say. It might come round and bite you on the ass.
Someone in my family isn’t speaking to me, for good reason. I opened up my big mouth and said a whole bunch of stuff I shouldn’t have, and hurt someone very much. Crappy thing is, I didn’t even mean much of it, or at least, not in the mean angry way it came out. And I put it in writing, so my victim can re-read it any time she …read more

Cheap eats for single mothers

Cheap eats for single mothers

Food at our house has to meet a whole bunch of requirements, key among them includes cheap, fast, and healthy. One of my favorite grains is quinoa, pronounced keenwa It is a complete protein, unlike pasta and rice, and so it fills my requirements for low-carb for my sedintary behind and high protein for my growing boy. Great source of Omega 3’s. Tasty. Easily paired with veggies, beans and meats.
Quinoa is a supergrain. It’s easily grown, and can survive a wide range of climates; it’s also much gentler on the environment than wheat and other grains. Lower in allergens, etc. …read more
