You might want to head on over to MSNBC and see their take on Babytalk’s annual motherhood survey, and married versus single moms. A very interesting read.

thrifty ideas: clothes

thrifty ideas: clothes

A lovely local mother just gifted me with the motherload of handmedowns for the King of Everything. I’m in the process of washing and sorting it — he’s got enough clothes to last him three years now! I’m so blessed. There are so many clothes that I’m probably going to split the lot and find another mama who needs such a gift and make her day.
My neighborhood has an amazing group of families, and these mothers and fathers supported me and helped me when the King and I first landed back in the US almost a year ago. One of …read more

Sunday’s ritual

Sunday’s ritual

It seems we’ve fallen into another golden time we’ll look back on when we’re older–with fondness and nostalgia, I hope. I’m a lucky single mother.
When I was a little girl, my father would take me to Doc Dalinsky’s over on Wisconsin and O Streets. It was a pharmacy, an old fashioned drugstore, where Nettie who worked behind the counter wore nurse’s whites, down to the stockings and the prim, powder blue cardigan over her shoulders and buttoned at her neck with a single button. Doc himself was a warm, larger than life man with a great affection for all things …read more

thinking about single mothers by choice

thinking about single mothers by choice

I wonder what life would have been like if I’d made the decision to have a child without the active involvement of a father. Would this be easier or harder or just different? I don’t know. Whether a woman finds herself with an unplanned pregnancy and decides to forge ahead, father or no… or if she’s a woman who wants a child but doesn’t feel like waiting for Mr. Almost Right to come along, and either has a planned pregnancy or adopts… I admire these strong, creative, confident women who are single by choice.
Poking around on the Web brought …read more

Friday fun: Connie Schultz

Friday fun: Connie Schultz

Connie Schultz is many things… Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, wife to Senator Sherrod Brown, author of the book …and His Lovely Wife
She was once a single mother, as well.
Like many women, I’d lived many lives by the time I met Sherrod. For eleven years I was a married, stay-at-home mom who wrote freelance stories at my kitchen table. Then, in the time it took me to say “But I want a career, too,” I became a single working mother, and I’d been doing that for another eleven years when Sherrod showed up. By then, I had figured out it was …read more

I’m not sure I’m cut out for this life

I’m not sure I’m cut out for this life

It came down to me tonight. Walking across the stage in front of hundreds of strangers to accept an award on behalf of my company. We won first place. I regaled my table with tales of the King of Everything and enjoyed myself immensely. that is all.

I must have missed the memo: summer’s OVER?

I don’t know about you single moms out there, but this summer just flew by for us… mostly thanks to my amazing mom, who took the King of Everything on adventures large and small, from an amazing playground to a waterpark to a friend’s house with a lake to a road trip down south. Me? I worked. Haven’t dipped a toe in the Atlantic all summer, more’s the pity.
Iv’e been going full tilt on summer hours that an email froma friend this mronign knocked me for a loop: “Xan you believe school starts tomorrow?”
Um. No. I couldn’t. Her …read more

Self esteem for the single mother

Self esteem for the single mother

I posted about a meme challenge to list ten things I like about myself.
I’m still thinking. I promised I’d write this today, and here it is, almost nine o’clock at night and I’ve not written a word. I’m getting up at four in the morning to go to New York; I’d better get to it, then. So… here goes…

here’s a hard one: ten things you like about yourself

here’s a hard one: ten things you like about yourself

Maria over at Mme. Meow’s Daily Dose of Zen Sarcasm tagged me to write ten things I like about myself.
I’m having a hard time doing that, right now.
Ahem. In the interest of full disclosure, I think I have a hard time doing that any time. I’m rough on myself. I demand perfection and, since I demand perfection, I’m always falling short. And let’s face it. If you’re a newly single mother, facing the pressures of splitting with your significant other. raising a child with little or no help, having to find the resources to care for your kid, yadda …read more
