Halloween and the single mother

Halloween and the single mother

I was going to make the King of Everything’s Halloween costume this year. Honest. He wants to be Robin Hood (mostly to get the bow and arrows, I suspect), and I had it all figured out. I had to get some fabric, which made it rather a challenge, me without a car and all, living in the big city, not a decent fabric store to be had. OK, I’d figure it out. I had time.
But oh, when you havde to work on the weekend in October, and go to the doctor’s, and all that good stuff, there’s not enough time.

I kid you not. Thanks to Ratphooey for pointing this one out to me.
MOMSPIT.

So, as promised.
The King of Everything had his second Tai Kwan Do lesson on Saturday morning.
I nearly cried.

the last good day of the year

the last good day of the year

Today was a day for soap bubbles and leaf hunting: the sun was shining again and the weather was picture perfect: brisk but not cold. The King of Everything and I spent the day with his grandparents and had a lovely nothing Saturday, full of amazing things that I’m dying to write about (the King’s second Tai Kwan Do lesson!) and happy moments with family.
I stayed up too late last night at the Rocky Horror Motion Picture Show… so I will leave you with a picture and a promise: tomorrow, you get pics of the Kid in his uniform …read more

One voice will not be heard; a million voices can change the world

There is an estimated 82.5 MILLION mothers residing in the United States.
Why aren’t we more active in demanding that the issues closest to our hearts: safe and excellent schools, flexible work hours, affordable and GOOD health care, paid family leave, decent child care, safe streets, healthy food, etc etc? Why can’t we join forces and make our voices heard? Other special interest groups have lobbyists. It’s about time we had someone making noise for our team. 65% of us voted in the 2004 elections. What went wrong? Why isn’t that number 85%… 95%?

taking a grown-up moment

taking a grown-up moment

I’m having a friend over for dinner tomorrow night. A grown up. I can’t remember the last time I invited someone over for dinner… I’m so excited! I have no idea what to make, but I’ve roasted some acorn squash that I’ll stuff with a wild rice mixture. Haricots verts. Either fish or chicken, depending on what looks good at the market. Some white wine. Some good cheese.
It’s hard to be a single mom (I know, I know, how many times have I said that?). All my friends are so busy, it’s impossible to get together. They don’t …read more

Howdy, folks, we have a winner! or two…

We have our Blogtoberfest winners! I’m so excited. The King of Everything and I played a game to choose the winners. We laid out his farm animals, one for each comment on the post, and he chose an animal. I counted which position the animal was in and voila! Instant winners…

What do you want your children to learn? Think about it, solomothers!

What do you want your children to learn? Think about it, solomothers!

Marketing is a powerful tool that can be used at the side of good or evil. I had a lovely lunch with a new friend today, who confessed that this whole environment thing had him genuinely worried. Global warming! No water for Atlanta in 80 days! Smith Island is disappearing. New Orleans wiped off the map. England’s underwater. Birds migrating north.
Knowledge is power. And how people manipulate that knowledge is powerful stuff, indeed. There is some volleying back and forth between Big Business and Environmental Interests, a little bit of ‘he said she said’, each group blaming the other for …read more

When politicians oversimplify, everyone loses…

Gotta love Romney. According to the Boston Globe, he’s gunning for single mothers, ladies. He has decided that we need to stop our children from having babies before marriage. He has decided that single mothers are a problem. His solution? Marriage.
