Solo Mother

A community rallies around a single mother

by christina on September 23rd, 2007

Sara Cole

Sara Cole was struck by a drunk driver while she unloaded one of her son’s bikes from the back of her car. She was pinned between the two cars and her hips and legs were smashed. After weeks in the intensive care unit, she has been moved to another unit while her four sons and an incredible community of neighbors, friends, family and complete strangers wait to see how she will fare through the multiple operations that still await her.

Incredibly–not so incredibly to this single mother– her community has stepped in to fill the gaping holes where this single mother cannot function: a neighbor has taken in all four boys, and the community has signed up to make meals, do laundry, chauffeur the children to their after school activities. There is a fund set up in her name to help defray the massive costs of this senseless accident. It could be any one of us, innocent bystanders to a stranger’s stupidity.

I understand if you can’t help this single mama out. Just please keep your eyes and ears and heart open. Somewhere close to you is a woman who could use a little help. Please give it to her.

Amen, Christina. If you don’t live in a supportive community, the easiest way to create one is by being supportive of others.

They live just an hour from me… I’m going to link to this. Thanks Christina!
A mom friend and her daughter at our school were recently hit by a drunk driver, too. He drove off and wasn’t found. Their car was totaled and Mom broke her ankle. Fortunately, they’ll be fine, although this has been traumatic emotionally. Their friends have been bringing them hot meals for dinner.

Kate, Rachel and Angel… in many ways, you and all these other wonderful women who visit Solomother are a community that keeps me going. Thank you for that.
