A few words about the holiday season
(But first… remember, you’re reading this blog for charity!)
This morning was the school-wide assembly for the holidays, and it was a treat to watch the kids The older kids did a fantastic step routine and sang Jingle Bells. Every class but my son’s performed — the school didn’t think there would be enough kids to sing. Rats!
My son’s school, though public, is definitely NOT non-denominational. We paid lip service to the other holdays by mentioning them in the first three sentences of the program, but after that it was All Jesus, All the Time. I’m still chewing over that one.
We haven’t been to a Kwanza celebration, but our friends Sarah and Gabriella invited us to their Chanuka party last Saturday night and we loved it. Nico got to help light the candles, and we listened intently to the story of the eight day miracle. We are trying to ration the chocolate coins!
It’s important to learn about other cultures, other traditions, other ways of life. The younger the better. Not just during the holidays, but every day. My son is beginning to understand that there are many ways to have a loving family; we have single parent friends, and traditional families. We have friends with two mommies, and friends with two daddies. We have friends from every color of the skin spectrum, and with wildly different family tales to tell. We’re learning how wide love is, how deep and true.
So many strangers have reached out and touched our lives these past three months, making the King of Everything and I feel safe during a frightning time. Thank you. Thank you for the lesson of love.

:) My mother started the King of Everything title when the Pitame (another nickname I’ll explain later) was just a babe. He had a teeshirt, even.
