Solo Mother

Back off. Butt out. Not your divorce.

by christina on December 18th, 2006

Maybe I can say this because I’m not a rabid Beatles fan — I was caught between Kiss and the Who when I was coming of age, thank you very much. (What that says about me, I’m not quite sure…) But the vitriol being spouted about celebrities as they gear up to split up is just… beneath us. Let’s not call Heather Mills McCartney a gold-digger, shall we? Is anyone calling K-Fed a gold-digger for the stunts and blackmail he’s pulling on Britney?

When I was a kid, divorce was less common. But whenever it happened, feelings ran high. When B’s father left them for another woman, everyone in high school knew about it, and we all hated him for it. To this day, I remember his name, and I remember the devestation his actions caused for his children, but especially B, who was my classmate. We ringed her with love and adolescent outrage, and probably said things to each other about Mr. B that weren’t nice at all. In retrospect, I wish we’d all kept our mouths shut. It was none of our business.

I’m sure there are folks out there talking about me, and saying wild things to my ex to ‘comfort’ him. Anyone who actually believes what’s being said was no friend of mine to begin with. I’ve tried very hard to be kind to my ex when it comes to talking about what went wrong, and why we were so ill-suited to each other. It means I can’t always say what I really think, except to myself. But perhaps that’s where the worst of it belongs. Perhaps some day I’ll write it all down on good, old-fashioned paper and then burn it, letting the smoke curl up to the heavens and bear away all the bitterness and hurt. Cause  you know, burning my computer just wouldn’t have the same, cleansing effect.

I think plenty of people are calling K-Fed a gold-digger. The only people who aren’t are sick to death of them both, and wish their 15 minutes of fame would end, already.

Macca’s too much of a heartthrob/hero/saint to people. He could have married and split from Princess Di and SHE’D have been called a gold-digger afterward.

Personally I think celebrity divorces are so public because they HAVE the money to get nasty and pay high-priced lawyers. It’s a sense of entitlement that most of us don’t have. They are rediculous because, frankly, most of the marriages are rediculous to begin with and all for show.
Trust me — a few years from now we’ll all see Tom’s Cruise’s contract marriage to Katy Holmes end in fire and brimstone.

I can see where that might be absolutely true, Paul. I can see that there is a temptation to push it way beyond civility when you have the money to throw behind your hurt and anger. Thank goodness most folks can’t afford to fuel their hurt that way.
