Big changes in India: Single mothers adopt

by christina on January 14th, 2007

The Sunday Express has written an interesting story, titled “The Sush Society” on single Indian women adopting daughters, in direct contradiction of this country’s strict family traditions. Divorced?? Unmarried?? Adopting??

Perish the thought, you can see some Grandfathers and Grandmothers saying. But it’s happening. Smitha Pethe is one of a growing number of women who choose to have a family without waiting for Mr. Right:

It was a conscious decision by Pethe, director of Mumbai-based Verginia Foods Ltd, to adopt a girl and never marry again. “After my divorce in 1983, I devoted all my time and energy towards my professional life. But, there was also a pressing need to have a family and I didn’t want to kill my desire,” she says.

It will be interesting to watch how this trend shapes up in more traditional cultures than the West… will we be blamed for the demise of Eastern society?

I think what’s different is calling it adoption and completing the legal paperwork. From what I know about some Indian cultures, it has always been pretty common for a woman without children to raise one of her poorer or overburdened relative’s children.

What’s new is that these women are adopting girls from orphanages, and going through some pretty big hoops to get it done. Pretty interesting to watch the shift. The article makes it seem like it’s a huge trend, but fewer than two dozen women have done this recently.
