so. tired.

I did it. I moved a two bedroom townhome by myself–with the assistance on moving day of Steve and Derrick, two of the nicest men a single mom could ever meet. They hauled all our stuff down all the stairs, loaded it on the truck, drove it to the new place, unloaded it all, and […]

Dear single moms: don’t do it alone

Golly, but I feel so much better.
I got together with the most amazing, stunning, smart, funny, beautiful, competent group of single moms this evening. Some of us were old hands at this single thing, some were just dealing with the first steps of single motherhood. Some had found their way through adoption, some through divorce, […]

Tis the season to be giving (and receiving), solo mothers!

The blogosphere is filled with the holiday cheer of… bling… I mean… bells… Salvation Army bells ringing in the shopping centers… tons of gift giveaways for the holidays…
Oh. Hang on. I’m conflicted. Is it better to give, or receive?
Why not do both this year?

Mother’s little helper

I was amazed. I was astounded. I was… dumbstruck by the fact that he didn’t know how to mop a floor. He had never had to do so, and very calmly suggested that I show him how to do it, and then he would know.
He was thirty-something years old!

When it’s too hard to ask for help

A fellow single mom recently lamented the lack of willing help from her family. Her parents and a sibling live nearby, and yet, on the rare occasions when she asks for help–aka, can the kids stay at your house tonight?–she never gets an easy, “Yes, of course!”
Instead, her family hems. And haws. And might be […]

A community rallies around a single mother

Sara Cole was struck by a drunk driver while she unloaded one of her son’s bikes from the back of her car. She was pinned between the two cars and her hips and legs were smashed. After weeks in the intensive care unit, she has been moved to another unit while her four sons and […]

Apparently, I found the wrong Single Mom Foundation. Who knew there were two?? With the same name, no less?

Yes, I’m brainwashing my son… why do you ask?

I heard myself doing it again the other day. Another longwinded speech about how awful it was, how terrible and irresponsible and bad for us all it was. I pointed to a piece of trash on the street and went into a diatribe of disgustedness. I railed. I rallied. I watched the reaction of my […]

Snow, and no husband to shovel the walk

I got caught short. It started to snow today, and all of a sudden I realized: I lived in the desert for two years. I don’t have shovels, rock salt, snow shoes or good clothes. the kid’s wearing suede shoes, and i’ve got slides on.
And I’m the one who has to shovel the walk.
At least […]

Help a mother out

This season, everybody needs somebody. My inbox is filled with articles from local newspapers from around the country–and the world–telling a family’s tale of hardship and need. Like this article from the Savanah Morning News, about a single mother who broke her ankle and is out of work. She’s looking for a little help with […]
