Happy Mother’s Day, single moms!

It has been a lovely day, grey skies and all. The KoE and I are busy doing housework and a little bit of detective work.
You see, someone apparently was in a desperate fix for Mother’s Day flowers, and helped him- or herself to the ones left at my gate yesterday. Thankfully, a neighbor stopped by […]

count down to Mother’s Day… T minus 10 hours and counting…

My kid has something up his sleeve for Mother’s Day. He and my mom have been making me a present for the past two weeks, more or less, and he comes home messy and painted and grinning ear to ear. He hasn’t even told me what the present is, which is a first for Mr. […]

Here’s a fun one for you: organic Easter egg dyes

Apologies to the non-Christians among us, who can at least take heart in the fact that we Christians are running around mixing our pagan Oestre rites of fertility in with the resurrection of Christ… (by the way, all you single mothers struggling to explain the Easter Bunny to your kids? Don’t go the pagan route… […]

The world’s most superficial holiday has me in a twist

Me. A Single Mom on Valentine’s Day. I’ve got it all planned. A big date with the King of Everything. What could be nicer? It’s my second Valentine’s Day as a single mother, you’d think I’d be pretty nonchalant about the whole thing by now. I mean, it’s a Hallmark holiday. It doesn’t mean much […]

OMG IT’S ALMOST VALENTINE’S DAY!

Thank goodness I did laundry today.
See, I’d glanced at the class list the King of Everything’s teacher had kindly sent home, then promptly put it down somewhere and forgot about it. This morning, as I was loading the dryer, a little speck of handwriting peeked out from under the dryer sheets: …”for Valentine’s Day (optional)” […]

Happy New Year!

Did you make your resolutions? Did you swear to lose 20 pounds, go back to school, save $500 a month, volunteer at the pound, the shelter and your kid’s school?
Slow down.
Single mother is a big job. I think we’ve got our hands full just keeping everyone fed and dressed in clean clothes and […]

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house…

There was this insane mess that somehow needed to be cleaned up, and presents that needed to be assembled, and the KoE’s overseas grandparents’ presents to wrap and assemble and such.

And it’s 10PM. And we just got home from my parents’ house, where I spent an insanely fun, insanely insane hour or two beginning to […]

What are your holiday traditions?

For some reason, it seems as though Thanksgiving came too soon this year, and has thrown us all off for Christmas. Everything has been too soon… the Handel’s Messiah Sing-Along at the Kennedy Center was on the first weekend of December, as was the Christmas Revels. We’ve already been to see the winter display at […]

It’s Christmas time in the city

If you ever stop by the nation’s capital around the holiday season, stop by the National Botanic Gardens. This year the incredible train set runs outside, while inside, extraordinary models of the city’s most famous buildings have been constructed of plant materials. Absolutely worth a trip or two. And it’s free, open to the public.

Getting through the holidays (holidaze?)

I’ve been in a Bah Humbug mood. I love this time of year. Really, I do. And the King of Everything is old enough to begin to understand the finer points of Christmas and not ask me why everyone is talking about the baby cheeses (of Bethlehem).
No really. Last year, we were in church and […]
