Thank goodness I did laundry today.
See, I’d glanced at the class list the King of Everything’s teacher had kindly sent home, then promptly put it down somewhere and forgot about it. This morning, as I was loading the dryer, a little speck of handwriting peeked out from under the dryer sheets: …”for Valentine’s Day (optional)” […]

Did you make your resolutions? Did you swear to lose 20 pounds, go back to school, save $500 a month, volunteer at the pound, the shelter and your kid’s school?
Slow down.
Single mother is a big job. I think we’ve got our hands full just keeping everyone fed and dressed in clean clothes and […]

There was this insane mess that somehow needed to be cleaned up, and presents that needed to be assembled, and the KoE’s overseas grandparents’ presents to wrap and assemble and such.
And it’s 10PM. And we just got home from my parents’ house, where I spent an insanely fun, insanely insane hour or two beginning to […]

For some reason, it seems as though Thanksgiving came too soon this year, and has thrown us all off for Christmas. Everything has been too soon… the Handel’s Messiah Sing-Along at the Kennedy Center was on the first weekend of December, as was the Christmas Revels. We’ve already been to see the winter display at […]

If you ever stop by the nation’s capital around the holiday season, stop by the National Botanic Gardens. This year the incredible train set runs outside, while inside, extraordinary models of the city’s most famous buildings have been constructed of plant materials. Absolutely worth a trip or two. And it’s free, open to the public.

I’ve been in a Bah Humbug mood. I love this time of year. Really, I do. And the King of Everything is old enough to begin to understand the finer points of Christmas and not ask me why everyone is talking about the baby cheeses (of Bethlehem).
No really. Last year, we were in church and […]

The blogosphere is filled with the holiday cheer of… bling… I mean… bells… Salvation Army bells ringing in the shopping centers… tons of gift giveaways for the holidays…
Oh. Hang on. I’m conflicted. Is it better to give, or receive?
Why not do both this year?

Here we go again.
Where is your child this Thanksgiving? This Christmas, Chanuka, Kwanza,Eid, Dilwali? And how are you going to cope with all the turmoil and the missing and the sadness and the lost memories?
I’m worried about you, single mother. We’ll talk about how to make it easier for the kids, later.

The most organized mothers I know have a Stash. They have some trunk or cupboard filled with gifts to go. Considering that I have only three tiny closets in my house, I don’t think I can dedicate the space to a full-fledged gift shop, but I could be a little more savvy when it comes […]

Welcome to our humble home! I’d stayed up until midnight Saturday night, cleaning the house and polishing the silver and setting the table. It was my first Mother’s Day as a single mom. I wanted it to be special.
I thought I’d tell you the story of how I come to have such lovely things, considering […]
