Teen pregnancy pact has me throwing up this morning

Teen pregnancy pact has me throwing up this morning

What on EARTH are we doing? Why did these teen-aged girls in Massachusetts, some younger than 16, intentionally get themselves knocked up? How selfish, self-centered, and stupid can we get? How unfair was this for the boys who helped these girls get pregnant, and who are now facing criminal charges of statutory rape?
I’m gobsmacked. 51 lives are being irrevocably altered by this insane, irresponsible decision. How can anyone think that raising a baby is a lark, a game, a frivolous decision to be made by children? How are these girls going to feed and house themselves and their babies? Will …read more

what do you think, single moms? Naughty, or nice?

what do you think, single moms? Naughty, or nice?

Apparently, there’s a single mom artist out there who thinks women can be naughty AND nice.
Vancouver artist Katherine Laflamme thinks moms can have it all, and has created a series of paintings, Pin-Up Moms, that challenge the way we view motherhood, womanhood, and washing the car.
Cheryl Rossi of the Vancouver Courier wrote a piece about the artist… but I think the thrust of the article completely misses the point.
Each of the images offers women, very obviously mothers, up as sexual beings, right there with their children. Three of the four works were purchased by men. I’m okay with that… …read more

Do you have insurance? Do you have a personal disaster plan?

Single mother Marjorie Jean-Baptiste’s home was in flames, the first floor impassable. One by one, she threw six of her seven children out of a second story window, relying on a snowbank to break their falls. Her oldest child bravely jumped.

Racists, bigots and nuts, OH MY!

Racists, bigots and nuts, OH MY!

I give up. The only lesson today’s politics are teaching my son is that America is full of a bunch of racist, bigoted, crazy, selfish, narcissistic money-grubbers. OH MY GOD. Obama’s BLACK? Geraldine Ferraro just noticed that, it seems, and sees fit to accuse America of the biggest Affirmative Action campaign of the EEOC’s history. Oh yeah. We’re only excited about Obama because he’s a black man. We feel sorry for him. He’s not nearly as qualified as a white woman or a white man, but we’ll give him a shot all the same, because he’s black and needs a …read more

Help Chance swim with the dolphins

Help Chance swim with the dolphins

Preemies are near and dear to this single mother. I was blessed with a robustly healthy babe–shoulders of a linebacker and lungs of an opera singer–when he was born only ten days early… but I myself was very premature. I weighed all of three pounds when I was born, and lost an alarming amount of weight before I stabilized. The only person who believed I would survive was my mom.
I don’t know that folks had much expertise on preemie babies when I was born. I was in that incubator for an awfully long time, but by pre-school, I’d caught …read more

Are you looking for a little hope, a little honor, solo mother?

Are you looking for a little hope, a little honor, solo mother?

I’m so sick of saying, “It is what it is,” about so much that’s going on, in my personal day to day life, in the lives of single mothers throughout the world, in the political and environmental sludge that seems to be suffocating every bright and hopeful possibility…
So I’d like to thank Jim for sending me this video today. If you want to laugh and cry and hope this Sunday, please settle down and watch it a time or three.
I think I’ve got a new mantra. YES WE CAN.

“But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been …read more

Single moms get blamed for all sorts of things. Let’s stand up and push back. We are the keepers of our children’s flames. Let’s protect and nourish them.

And the winner of Big Boned is…

And the winner of Big Boned is…

We have the most scientific method of selecting random winners here at Chez KoE. In fact, it’s so random, it has become one of the King of Everything’s favorite games.
You see, telling the KoE to choose a number between one and ten invariably resulted in him choosing the number one — or the number ten — ad nauseum, ad infinitum, amen. So finally, I fell upon this ingenious solution: I count the number of unique responders to a contest post, and the KoE and I select the corresponding number of little plastic figurines. This time, we had what appeared …read more
