Solo Mother

Creativity is so important, single mothers…

by christina on March 9th, 2008

Yeah, it’s important for everyone, but especially for us parents who do twice the work with half the hands. I can only hope my kid grows up to think as far outside the box as Improv Everywhere: We cause scenes.

Their latest scene involves three ‘operatives’ schlepping their desktop computers — tower, monitor, the whole deal — to a Starbucks in New York on 7th Avenue. A small thing, no? But blew people’s minds.

I’m posting about this because it reminded me of something I did today.

I was walking to pick up my son and passed by a local Starbucks. It was a rainy, blustery day but there were still folks out walking. I watched them approach a local art installation and entirely pass it by; a grove of light/sound posts planted in the middle of the sidewalk. My son and I often go there, a destination for joyous play… but I watched every single pedestrian carve a wide berth around the seemingly innocuous grove of stainless steel poles.

I, on the other hand, chose to walk straight through the grove, even without my son to give me an excuse to play. I touched segments of each pole and smiled in delight with the different tonalities my touch inspired. I weaved my way through the grove several times, the rain coming down in mists and droves. The customers in Starbucks watched me, perplexed; I don’t think any of them knew what they beheld as they sat sipping their mochachinos. Frankly, they watched me like I was nuts. But I know better. I know there is magic in the most mundane days, and my child and I seek out these opportunities to make something extraordinary out of the ordinary.

I hope you find these chances, too.
