Divorce and taxes
I don’t know what to do.
HR wants these forms back pronto, and I’m absolutely stumped. W-4! State taxes! Withholdings, exemptions, and how many deductions do you take??
The one thing I do know: unless I go to court and have us declared legally separated, I can’t claim head of household on my taxes. There is a slight possibility that I can declare him a non-resident alien, by virtue of the fact that he lives in Dubai. There’s a question for the friendly folks over at the IRS! So tonight, I get to read the IRS’s publication 504 entitled, “Divorced or Separated Individuals”. Learn this number by heart: Toll-Free, 1-800-829-1040. It’s the telephone information number for the IRS (for individuals with questions) and they man the phones until 10PM, Monday through Friday.
I think I’m listening to something from the Nutcracker right now. Gotta love hold music. NOT.
I have been on hold for half an hour. I think I’m going to give up.
However, The Modern Woman’s Divorce Guide has a great section on Divorce Preparation. Definitely a site worth perusing.

In case of doubt, assume the assumptions that favor you. Maybe you get audited 3 years from now… or maybe you don’t.

LOL Anonie, I would do that but my luck forces me to be honest. Every time I try to bend the rules, I get caught.
