Divorce parties make fun of a difficult transition.
I wonder what my cake topper would look like? The little groom doll would probably be at the top of the cake, looking slim and dashing and coiffed, and the little bride doll would be somewhere down near the bottom of the tiers with a baby and a computer and a blow up doll and a washing machine and a kitchen sink on her back. His cake would probably have a procine bride lounging on a divan at the top of the cake while the poor groom’s on his knees shoving money at the bride with one hand and pointing one of those pistols at his head with the other.
According to the Houston Chronicle’s article, these imaginings aren’t far from the truth. Celeb Shanna Moakler of The Barkers held a big do to celebrate her upcoming disaster.
Her cake featured a knife-weilding bride and a spill of blood down the three-tiered cake that pointed to a fallen groom at the bottom. Yeah!
There’s a business for this sort of thing. Folks are renting hearses and entrepreneurs are snapping up domain names (check out www.divorcepartyplanner.com!).
When we finally sign on the dotted line, I’ll probably faint with relief, and cry with sadness, and laugh with joy for the possibilities that will open for me. I know what kind of party I’d like to have. Champagne. A romantic night out on the town. A quiet reminder that I’m alive, I’m beautiful, I’m intelligent, I’m worthwhile. You know? Because life doesn’t end just because you’re closer to forty than you’d ever dreamed possible, divorced, and a single mother. Of course, another night out on the town with my women friends, watching belly dancers, eating amazing Middle Eastern food, and dancing with the beautiful gay men at a club in Dupont Circle wouldn’t be bad, either.
How did you mark the end of your marriage?

After our 10 year marriage, in which he was VERY controlling, all of OUR friends were really HIS friends. On the weekends he had the girls I would attend the free festivals that happen all summer long here in Milwaukee - and made some NEW friends!! I have 3 best friends that I met during that time that were my bridesmaids when I re-married. :-)

Rebecca, I wish my ex lived close by. I know women who don’t want their children to ever see their fathers again but ARG! This 24/7 mom thing with no end in sight is… difficult. I don’t get much time to just be me without the Barnacle.
Oh well. It could be worse. I could be one of those women who wants to keep her kids from their father.
Washington has some great free stuff, too. I’m looking forward to the summertime!

LOL Carrie! I can’t imagine having a party when this is finally over. Well, not a big one. I’ll probably crawl into bed for a few days. Hopefully, not alone. ;-)
