from the other side of the pond: thoughts on being a single mom
There are some rumblings in Jolly Old England that girls are getting themselves knocked up so they can have a posh Council flat and live on the dole. If you scratch the surface of the blogosphere you can come across some pretty nasty, bitter blogs written by nasty, bitter men who seem to think that every single mum has got it in for the system, and we’re getting a free ride.
Kate Saunders writes a great piece for the Independent (Yes, I am a single mother) that shows up such ramblings for what they are: rants and ravings from loud but misguided voices. And gives a few good laughs along the way:
Marriage has become biodegradable. Relationships come with sell-by dates. We are now a nation of serial monogamists, who expect to fall in love more than once. A dog licks its balls because it can, and modern men often seem to bugger off for the same reason - but don’t imagine I’m blaming the new, fractured family on men. It’s not as simple as that.
Looks like Kate has some good books out, too. Think I’ll go browse awhile.
