Happy Halloween
There’s a reason I came back to this city.
Sunday, I took the Kid up to the National Zoo to celebrate Halloween the coolest way I know how: Trick or Treat at the Zoo. The elephants were smashing pumpkins, the apes and monkeys were in costume, the loot was organic for the most part, with very little in the way of candy. We had a blast.
Today, on the actual DAY, my mother took the little guy trick or treating, and then to spend the night at the Up Up Up (what do you call the top floor apartment in a three story walk up?). Just what the doctor ordered.
Me time.
Had an exquisite sushi dinner with a very dear friend, laughing and talking about the most important and the most inconsequential things, you know — grown up talk. Wandered the city looking at the young shining all electric in their costumes and their immortality. Felt a bit like a child again, full of wonder and imaginings, unafraid of the future and excited about what tomorrow might bring. Deserving of good things.
My advice to all of you is to carve out some time for yourselves this week, as we gear up for the holiday season and ratchet our stress levels up even higher. Bake bread. Curl up with the phone off and read a great book. Go for a walk and look at the fall foliage. Take a chance.
Stretch your wings and re-learn how to fly.
