How young is too young for adventure?
We have come so far, the King of Everything and I. He’s less than two weeks away from being promoted from pre-K to Kindergarten. He’s reading on his own, but still loves to be read to, which is why we’re going through an orignial publication of The Jungle Book by Kipling at breakneck speed. He will NOT be the bad guy, no matter what, and he is kind to babies and old people. He’s got a wicked sense of humor and an incredible sense of play.
People smile when they pass him on the street. They can’t help it.
This weekend will mark another, extraordinary milestone: He’s going to New York City. Without me.
His best friend and his best friend’s father are taking my bright-eyed boy to the City to see the Yankees play. In Yankee
Stadium. They will take the train up, just the guys. They will eat Cracker Jacks and hot dogs, and will be painfully hot.

They won’t get back to our home town until late late Saturday night, so he will spend the night at his friend’s house.
I’m so excited for him. I Wish I could share this adventure with him, but to be ‘one of the guys’ is going to be so terrific for him. I can’t believe it. He asked me to come with him to the train station bright and early on Saturday morning so we could have lots of hugs along the way, but he’s excited, not scared at all.
This from the kid who has recently forbidden me from kissing him good-bye in the classroom because “all the other kids think kissing’s disgusting.”

Hey, Ms. Lany! The friend’s dad apparently called his wife when they arrived in New York to ask if the boys EVER stopped talking. The answer is a resounding, NO.
I feel for him. I really do. But it’s a ‘better you than me’ sort of thing.

My hats off to you for having the courage to let him go. It will do wonders for him and you!
I hope he has as much fun as I think he will.
