I must have missed the memo: summer’s OVER?

by christina on August 20th, 2007

I don’t know about you single moms out there, but this summer just flew by for us… mostly thanks to my amazing mom, who took the King of Everything on adventures large and small, from an amazing playground to a waterpark to a friend’s house with a lake to a road trip down south. Me? I worked. Haven’t dipped a toe in the Atlantic all summer, more’s the pity.

Iv’e been going full tilt on summer hours that an email froma friend this mronign knocked me for a loop: “Xan you believe school starts tomorrow?”
Um. No. I couldn’t. Her note sent me scrambling through the Web for the school calendar; to my immense relief, school starts NEXT Monday./

Can you tell, we’re not ready for summer to be over?

I’ve ogt a weird list of school supplies to find, ranging from crayons and coloring books to disinfectant wipes and medical gloves. What, pray tell, would a school possibly want with medical gloves and a classroom full of four year olds? No really. Don’t answer that. I don’t want to know.

We’ve had a hard time filling the kid’s school uniform requirements. Who knew grey trousers were so hard to find? My mother,. ever the intrepid explorer, finally had a frank conversation with the manager of our local Macy’s, and asked him how, for heaven’t sake, how, could a local, inner city store, not stock what it’s city’s public schools require? Amazingly, the manager had no better answer than, “I’m sorry ma’am, I don’t understand either. I can have one of our other stores ship what you need right to your door.” Go, mom!

So, in the spirit of not being ready for the school year, I happily point you towards someone on b5media who has rounded up some links to help you. Please visit Charlene over at Weary Parent and see if you can glean some tips from her roundup of the best back to school advice she could find!

No kidding about the school supplies. My kid’s school wants boxes of 12 crayons, markers and colored pencils. For some reason all these items coms in boxes of 8, 10, 16, 24, etc, but the boxes of 12 are a little bit scarcer than hens’ teeth.

    What’s that about?

Cristina, don’t tell me that. I’ve got to find the packages of fat crayons… in sets of twelve. AAAUGH!

    hmmm…. I count myself lucky.

In the interest of putting more $$ into the tourism industry, MI doesn’t start school until after labor day.

That, and my daughter’s public school has no uniforms, and the most difficult to find item on her list is marble composition notebook and a marble graph paper notebook because the department and grocery chains have fancy designs, not the traditional marble cover, so I have to go to an office supply store.

Yay, Navi. That is lucky indeed. Though I’m glad about the uniforms. It makes getting dressed every day a no-brainer.

ah, yes, that would be a positive - my daughter’s school environment, so far, doesn’t require much having to figure out what to wear, however (besides making sure she has clean clothes, that aren’t stained - she doesn’t get that, as she’s a ‘throw the first thing she finds on’ kid). I’m sure it’ll be more of a challenge as she gets older, though…
