I think I’m in love
The King of Everything and I went to the City of Alexandria’s birthday party this evening. We were met by one of our best friends who in turn introduced us to her friends, who in turn introduced us to their friends. This amorphous group banded together by a strategically hung pinanta, and was bounded by five tables groaning with food on one side. For some strange reason, I was gregarious today, and happily chatted with all and sundry.
The woman on the blanket behind ours was lovely — physically appealing, beautiful in a classical, competent, economic scale, no overblown rose she. And personally appealing, with her handsome and hysterically funny five year old son. The two boys were thick as thieves in an instant, and when we went on a walkabout to explore the festival, she and her son accompanied us.
Later, sitting back on our blankets, waiting for the music and the fireworks to start, I paid closer attention to the way she was referring to her life. There was no mention of a man, not even in passing. Any conversation that included the word ‘we’ was obviously referring to her and her son. I looked at her hands. No ring.
“Are you a single mother?” I asked, holding my breath.
She smiled. “Yes I am. I noticed you don’t wear any rings. Are you single by choice?”
“No, unfortunately, I came about this the old fashioned way.”
We talked a bit about how she’s going to handle the no father bit when it gets more important to her son, we talked about a million little things but what kept running through my mind is, “Wow! I want to be this woman’s friend.”
I’m sneaky, though. I asked for her e-mail so I can send her some of the photos I took of the evening, of her and her son.
