If you’re facing a divorce when there are children involved, think mediation

by christina on September 3rd, 2007

The ever amazing Kate over at Baby Lune sent me a link to an article in the Star about using mediation as an alternative to messy, much more expensive court divorces.

When contemplating a split of such magnitude, how you deal with the first steps will set the tone for your interactions later on. It is important to keep in mind that, no matter your reasons for breaking up, you are most likely going to have to act as a team for the rest of your childrens’ lives. Mediation is a less confrontational way to go about divorce. Keep in mind, however, that it only works if both of you come to the table with your kids’ best interests at heart.

It’s that last part that’s the problem though. Ex guys can be bad about that — or mine is. Lately really bad. But I’m still insisting on mediation it’s still a good idea in my book.

The last part of your post - where it says that you both have to have the children’s best interests in mind - is absolutely true. Our mediation sessions centered mostly around what would work best for my ex husband, so it was a frustrating process. But I do recommend mediation for divorcing couples who maintain respect for each other and ultimate concern for the kids. It is a much less expensive and far less adversarial process than using lawyers.
