It’s National Singles Week… how will you celebrate yourself?

by christina on September 22nd, 2008

artistic two handsI often hear from other single mothers that in some ways, they like being single mothers for one very simple reason: they don’t have to defer to anyone else’s ideas on how a house or family should be run. A benign dictatorship seems appealing on some mornings, when ‘because I said so’ is so much more satisfying than negotiation.

Some times, it’s hard to do it all by yourself. Sometimes, we wish we had a life partner who would willingly shoulder the burdens, take a weight off our shoulders, take the kids to the park on Saturday morning so we could get a little more sleep.

Mostly, I hope, we single mothers are happy with who we are, what we have, what we don’t have…

I’m having friends over for dinner tomorrow night, I’m going to tango on Wednesday night, I’m having lunch with a gentleman friend on Thursday, and going to an Obamaparty on Friday night.  Isn’t it ironic that this Singles celebration should fall on the second anniversary of my own, personal independence from fear, lies, and abuse? Whoo.

How are you celebrating your singleness?

Hi Christina. I wasn’t aware that National Unmarried and Singles Week existed. Thanks for writing about it. I wrote something up for Dating Dames and linked to your post.

I hope that you enjoy the week!

Christina, have a great Obama party! Good luck getting sleep, too, and thanks for the blog. My friend Lisa and I are blogging about being single, but neither of us have kids, so we like to read the perspectives of other singles who are in different single-situations from ours. I will be celebrating by going to an Obama party myself. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!!!
