Solo Mother

I’ve joined the Compact

by christina on January 10th, 2007

No, it’s not a cult. Kate over at Babylune is in, how ’bout you?

It’s a group started in San Francisco (where else?) that made a promise not to buy anything new for a year. I wrote about it over at Inside Motherhood (read “Can you live with less? The Compact is inspiring change“). From time to time, I’ll write about how I’m doing with that promise. So far, so good. My first snag was today, when I got a call for a job interview on Friday (go, ME!) but don’t have any nice paper to print my resume! What to do?

DSC00510I’m going to call a few friends and see if they can loan me a few sheets. If that doesn’t work, I’m going to have to think of something. This is a chi-chi firm. Doesn’t do to show up with plain old copy paper. No No NO! I haven’t scored anything fabulous, but I am refraining from purchasing a coffee bean grinder, bookshelves, paint, or clothes. I picked up three bags of clothes from a good mother Samaritan, and most look good on me. I did go to the grocery store but only bought things on sale, mostly buy one, get one FREE! and all of it was food.

My mother, lovely lady that she is, spotted a children’s thrift store sporting a gigantic, “Buy one, get one free!” sale, and so we’ll stock up on winter clothes again, since the King of Everything has outgrown most of the winter clothes we have for him already. Go figure! His little wrists are getting mighty cold, poking out between coatsleeves and mitten bottoms. When my cleaning products run out, I’ll look into Karen Logan’s “Clean House Clean Planet” and find some recipes for making my own household cleansers. It’ll be great.

chocolate counts as food, doesn’t it?

    Hello solo mother,

You’re post about the Compact has inspired me, although I must admit, it scared me at the same time! I’m going to see what I can do…it sure sounds tough! BTW - Chocolate is absolutely food - I hope wine is too.

I’m a bit slow on the uptake about your divorce, but wanted to share my website and blog with you,
    http://www.themodernwomansdivorceguide.com and
    http://www.moddivorce.typepad.com

The website is filled with free information, worksheets, tools and resources, including links to free resources and child custody resources, for women in divorce. It’s a free site, but you will want to “join now” to gain access to all of the tools, including questionnaires you can use when talking to a lawyer, mediator, or lawyer referral service. There are also links to free legal resources - including one you’ve already found - lawhelp.
I hope these are useful for you. If you have any comments or questions you can email me at ht@moddivorce.com.

    Best,
    Helene

    You’re a strong-willed one, SoloMother.

Let me see if I can dig up some creamy vellum for ya– I could have sworn we had some around here. *whines*
