Money Magazine’s 35 Minutes to Riches

by christina on January 6th, 2008

don’t lose your shirtI’ve been poking around trying to figure out college savings plans (and when I finally understand it, I’ll be sure to share this wisdom with you, single moms!) and came across this brilliant list of simple, amazing things to do to boost your personal wealth and financial well-being. I’d recommend that we each try to perform as many of these recommended steps as possible in the coming year, beginning with their #1 and #2 suggestions…

find out your credit score and raise your credit score. Since buying a home for the King and I is high on our list of things to do in the near future, this one is a crucial first step.

And, since my wallet disappeared on Friday night (can you say… well, you might be able to say it, but not around the kids), I’m going to pay close attention to the tips that have to do with protecting one’s identity, including cancelling junk mail (”Call 888-5OPTOUT to remove your name from credit issuers’ mailing lists….Most important, you’ll cut the risk of an identity thief raiding your mailbox or garbage can and applying for credit in your name.and freezing credit applications”) and look into freezing credit applications (consumersunion.org/securityfreeze.htm) so whomever is running around with my ID and cards right now can’t buy themselves a house in my name.

There’s one more I’m going to work on this week: how to keep more of [my] paycheck.
