moving boxes
I think I’ve got two weeks of after work time to pack up our whole house and move to mid-town. The packing would go much more quickly if the King of Everything would stop stealing my boxes. Currently, he is doing cartwheels through the house inside the box.
Doubt me, do you?

He begged me for days for a box to play in… since I don’t have a car, it’s difficult to get boxes to the house, and these were delivered by the coolest mom in the universe, my own mama. But in the end, I sacrificed one box to the greater good, and it’s all the kid has played with since. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest gifts are the best gifts, and being able to buy the biggest and best doesn’t always mean you’re giving your child what he or she really needs. I hear so often from single mothers who are struggling to make ends meet, and who feel terribly guilty that they can’t even think of competing with the Joneses. Relax. If your children have food in their bellies, a watertight roof over their heads, and clothes to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and a mama who knows how to make something out of nothing, like a cardboard box, a little love, and a lot of imagination… they are doing all right.

Awesome post. Just what I needed. Been feeling single mama guilt myself lately. But Cedar is ok. We’re all ok I suppose. And boxes are very cool playthings - we have a few of our own. Cedar likes to hide in them, he always acts like there’s no way I could have known he was in there when he pops out. :)

Glad I could help a little, Jennifer. You’re right. We’re all OK. I think we need to let go and stop listening to what the TV and the advertisers tell us and simply live. It’s a nice feeling. I point out to my kid whenever he’s spewing a commercial back to me, and make him think about why HE really wants such and such and so and so. It all comes down to this: Is it more fun than a cardboard box? I thought not.

I have trouble getting rid of ANY boxes in this house, they all become beds and forts etc. And the plastic inserts become abstract sand molds. Oh well reuse does come before recycle!
And I was really commenting just so I could thank you for sending that copy of Single Mom Seeking. I have no idea where in the postal system the first copy went, but I am SO looking forward to getting to read it. I have become a huge fan of her blog since then so it was a great surprise!
Thank you so much!
