OK, single mother, what’s holding you back?
HR hates me. They take one look at the education line of my resume and it’s circular file for me, baby. Doesn’t matter that I’ve got some serious experience under my belt.
What can single mothers do to boost their confidence and showcase their skills?
First off, network. Talk to other mothers. Reach out to high school alumni — or college alumni if you’ve graduated. Join book clubs, neighborhood social groups, whatever is available and accessible and works with your schedule. Talk to people. Have business cards printed, with your name, title, phone and email address. If you have a Web site, add that too.
Ask around. Chances are, you’ll know someone who knows someone who thinks his or her company has a job you’d be perfect for. Even when you spot an ad in the local paper, ask your friends if they know anyone who works there.
Do you know how to interview? Do you know how to write a resume? Are you trying to figure out how to break back into the workforce after a break? Do you know where to look for grants and scholarships to go back to school?
Don’t worry. Help’s coming. I’ve got a needy boy calling my name to snuggle (and yes, my name is Mama), but I’ll leave you with a thought to ponder: college credit for life experience.

nice post- i was in a similar boat a coupla years ago and i think the company i worked for knew it all too well- they used and abused me till i couldn’t take it anymore!
it took me long enough (nearly 12 years) but i eventually did some networking and convinced myself that i may actually be worth something to someone else despite no formal “further” education.
i took a HUGE leap into the unknown and came out the better for it… albeit a little poorer- but thats also not forever.
PS i found you on del.icio.us, i’m a single mom too- nice site this
