Old friends

by christina on September 20th, 2007

I ran into a friend from my elementary school days… It’s funny, we went to high school together, too, but she seems so proud to tell her friends, “We were friends in kindergarten!”

I haven’t seen her since I moved back to the States;indeed, I didn’t even get in touch with her when I got back. But there she was on the street, walking home as I was leaving the store.

We couldn’t be more different. She’s been at the same, glamorous, interesting job for 17 years, is still married to her one and only husband, has two kids in private school, lives in the ritzy part of town. I love it. I admire her life. Some part of me wishes my life had been more like hers.

But most of all, I”m grateful to have survived the experiences of the past year… and of the past ten years… because I know they have made me into a better, wiser, and I hope kinder, person. I know whatever trials my friend has had, they have made her a wonderful woman.

I’m so happy I ran into her tonight.

This is very off topic, but I just wanted to share a website with any of your readers who might have older kids. My 11 year old daughter has begun staying home by herself after school this year while I’m at work, and she decided that she wanted to create a website for other latchkey kids (really, any kids) to go and play fun games, post funny pictures, etc. So she and some friend created this site, http://kidsonly.tripod.com. Check it out! Thanks, Christina! Love your blog.
