Racists, bigots and nuts, OH MY!

I give up. The only lesson today’s politics are teaching my son is that America is full of a bunch of racist, bigoted, crazy, selfish, narcissistic money-grubbers. OH MY GOD. Obama’s BLACK? Geraldine Ferraro just noticed that, it seems, and sees fit to accuse America of the biggest Affirmative Action campaign of the EEOC’s history. Oh yeah. We’re only excited about Obama because he’s a black man. We feel sorry for him. He’s not nearly as qualified as a white woman or a white man, but we’ll give him a shot all the same, because he’s black and needs a leg up in this world. Give me a break. Let me ask you this, Geraldine. Is Hillary a candidate because she’s a WOMAN?–or because she was a former U.S. President’s WIFE? Cause from where I’m sitting, I’m watching the pot call the kettle black and by god, some part of me is thinking, Sweet jehosaphat, how stupid can we all be? Of COURSE he’s black. Why is this an issue? Why is this a ‘thing’? Does Clinton’s campaign really think the KKK is a strong voting block in this nation? Speaking of terrorists…

And then there’s the everlasting idiocy that is Steve King, Congressman from Iowa who should have stock in duct tape, considering how many times he should have just taped his mouth shut. What is this country coming to? Why on earth are we all such assholes? Do you think Omar Bradley was ever accused of being a Muslim because of his first name?? Do you know who King is? He’s the ranking Republican member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law.

I am having one hell of a time trying to explain this all to my almost five year old. He loves Obama, unconditionally. He’s responding to the genuine nature of that presidential candidate, and looks with a sour face at McCain and Clinton whenever he sees them on TV. They don’t resonate with him. They don’t inspire faith and awe in his little, five year old heart. Why should they? They are dried up, frightening people to his eyes. I don’t think Dubs was qualified to be President when we elected him to office nearly eight years ago. If Obama is truly not ‘qualified’ well, I’ll take my chances. He’s at least smart enough to surround himself with the kinds of folks who will take his message and make it policy. That’s good enough for me.

Vote for Obama, single mamas. Don’t break my kid’s heart.

But seriously. Can we all just stop pretending that there’s not something fundamentally wrong with our country right now? If you can’t see the hatred, the bigotry, the racism that is fueling our nation’s terrors, then you are blind or overly righteous. We have nothing to fear but fear itself. And fear is consuming us, crippling us, destroying us. Teach your children to understand and respect differences. Teach them to accept and respect views and religions and lifestyles different from their own. Teach them the art of conversation, listening, and debate. Keep their minds open, and their hearts will remain open, too.
