Self esteem for the newly single

by christina on June 21st, 2007

Let’s face it. Stress kills. Literally. It kills your libido, kills your confidence, and eventually, it will kill you. Stress can cause you to pack on pounds or melt away, scream at your kid or puddle in tears. Stress is not something we need more of in our lives, and separating from a partner is stressful.

Your assignment this Hump Day is to identify a source of stress in your life and take active steps to eliminate it. If you and your kid are at loggerheads lately, perhaps you need a mini-vacation, either together or apart.

Want to know what’s holding me back?

My complexion.

I can’t bring myself to the gym because I think everyone is going to be staring at my face. I have zits. I can’t stand the thought of sweating and exerting myself and showing my faults. My confidence is constantly undermined by what I imagine folks must be saying to themselves about my skin. It’s insanity, I know. Folks (pretend) don’t notice. They wonder what I’m talking about when I bring it up.

So Enough Already! I’ve made an appointment tomorrow to begin to recapture my beauty, my self-confidence, my freedom.

What’s holding you back?

My belly (but I am working on it).
    My old clothes.
Need of a cut and dye job.

I am but a makeover away from taking over the world.

My job …. I work mainly out of my house. It sounds like the dream we all strive for - I’m able to shuttle the kids to their activities, don’t have to deal with commuting or getting dressed up for work. But the isolation of being alone so much and only seeing the 4 walls of my home is what holds me back … too much quiet time to start questioning and doubting myself. :(

Carrie, I just found out that there is no ‘cure’ for acne, but that you can manage and control it. I hope proactiv works for you! Benzoil peroxide is a pretty good product for regular spots.

I, on the other hand, am getting chemical peels and laser treatments. OOOK.

Kate, I hear you. I’ve got the belly and the butt, and refuse to buy any clothes until both are significantly reduced… but I’m terrified to go into the gym because I’ll sweat my camouflage makeup off and everyone will see how hideous I am. Aren’t I a mess???

Ike, I used to work from home, in a foreign country, without even access to enough money to get around. It was hell. Make sure you get out. If you have a laptop and it’s that kind of work, go work in a wifi coffee shop once a week. See if there’s a class, a book group, or some other social gathering with common interests that you can get involved in. It’s not healthy to be so isolated, as you know. What kinds of ideas do you have about changing your situation?

Ugh, Angel, I did that for a while. I wanted to rub Mitchum all over my body. LOL
