Solo Mother

September 11

by christina on September 11th, 2008

I know what day it is. Believe me. I know. I have so many tears in my throat I can’t get them out. I’m thinking about our scared nation, seven years later, and the mess our media and the powers that be have made of the War on Terror. I’m also thinking about the people who lost their lives in those first, insane days after September 11, 2001, because their skin was dark or their hair was covered. Innocent people crushed under the fear and ignorance and hatred that still cripples us today.

As a parent, I try to teach my child to be better than I am. I try to teach him to be kinder to others, better with money, more forgiving of faults. If you find yourself looking in askance at the person standing next to you at  the supermarket because she has an accent, or because he doesn’t fit your neat little stereotype of ‘good people’ please, I beg you: don’t pass that ignorance on to your children. I know there are bad people in the world, but you can’t just look at someone and peg how they’re going to behave based on some racial or religious profile. Be careful.

This year’s elections are spinning out of control. Please pay attention to the issues, and don’t let your personal hopes or prejudices cloud your ability to truly listen to what these two candidates are promising the American public.
