Single mother arrested: three children found dead

by christina on February 26th, 2008

I don’t usually comment on the sensational headlines. But tonight, my head and heart keep screaming: WHY?

Why are all three of that single mother’s children dead?

If you know someone is overwhelmed and isn’t coping, you get her help. You don’t watch a woman with three children push an empty stroller down the street and simply assume it’s not your problem, it’s going to be okay, you don’t need to get involved. Ethically, we have an obligation to get involved, to watch out for men and women in trouble, to keep an eye on children and protect them, from their own parents if we have to.

Sleep deprivation, depression, financial panic can cause even the normally sanest of human beings to crack and do horrific things. I sound like a broken record, but say it with me, people: we need a tribe to get by in this day and age. No one should be trying to go it all by their lonesome. This woman had family who didn’t keep an eye out for trouble, who didn’t step in and help. This woman had neighbors who thought something wasn’t right, but they stood by and did nothing. I don’t get it. I really don’t.

The godmother that said something like ‘if we’d known it was that bad’, uh, is trying to raise three kids alone ever easy? You don’t wait until someone loses it to offer help, then it’s too late. Heartbreaking.

Leslie, that’s the tragedy behind the tragedy. folks suspected that something was wrong, but no one offered to help.

That is sad, but all too common.I agree, in this day and age it takes a village to raise a child. We won’t make it without them.
