SingleMom dot Com: A great resource for single mothers in the US
I can’t afford the rent where I’m living, and my house is below what the market is asking right now, because it’s a fixer-upper that’s not being fixed. I’m poking around looking for alternatives and answers, and stumbled onto Single Mom, a wonderful site with tons of information for moms trying to make a whole life on half the income and less than half the help.
Tonight, I”ll do a little research on how to mitigate the expense of living in the city. I can’t/don’t want to move outside the city right now. My kid goes to public school, and I don’t want to have to transfer him, mid-year. He needs stability right now. Sure it would be less expensive to move out of the city and still use public transportation to get to the job, but it would shake up everything in the KoE’s life right now, so moving to a less expensive area isn’t an option.
I had forgotten that HUD has so many resources for low-income groups. And let’s face it, single moms… if you’re trying to pay for a place for everyone to live on a single income, consider yourself at a disadvantage and check out every possible avenue. You might even want to consider buying a HUD home, though there aren’t many available in my neck of the woods.
I hear that folks have snapped up bargains when dealing with forclosures, too. And if you’ve never bought a home before, you should look into the first time buyers programs that HUD offers. Every little bit counts.
How do you make ends meet, single mom? I think we could all use another bright idea or three as we gear up for another recession. Brrr.

I’m doing okay now (thank god) but during my first year of single motherhood I was literally scrounging for coins to buy my son is diapers. One day I went through my checking account statement and added up all of the little things - lunches at fast food places, cigarettes (yes I’m unfortunately addicted to nicotine) and gas. The total each month came out to about $355.00!!! So the first thing I did - sold my SUV straight up for a fuel efficient Ford Focus (saves me $100/month), started rolling my own cigs (saves me $50/month) and started packing lunch for work - every day, no matter what (saves me $100-150/month). I also lost about 10lbs by not eating out. Now - even though I have a better job I still do all of these money saving tricks and save tons of money by very rarely going out to eat or going out. Oh - and I also don’t have cable TV - saves $60/month.
Another option might be finding a single mom roommate. There are some options out there - put a posting on Craigslist and say you’re looking for another single mom. My best single mom bud did this and found one lickety split. Now her rent will be cut in half and her daughter will have a psuedo brother to play with.
Hope this helps…
