I know, I know. Every year, it seems, I congratulate my single mother friends on being both father and mother to their kids.

Here’s to you, for doing all those things the ‘guy’ is supposed to do, like mow the lawn and take out the trash. For pitching softball and coaching the soccer team and volunteering at Cub Scouts. For handling ‘the talk’ with grace, humor, and aplomb. For gamely trying to teach your sons to pee standing up. For having a full tool set and knowing how to use it.
You are amazing, single mothers. Happy Father’s Day.

What did you ladies do to celebrate? I worked!
Well, that’s what fathers do, right? They work.
But if you’re lucky, you’ll have a father who plays, and rides bikes, and cleans a little. Someone who cooks even when it’s too cold to grill and gets home in time for dinner, even if he has to go back to the office afterwards.
Let’s not forget the grandfathers in our children’s lives. Grandfathers can offer a stable, reliable male presence in a child’s life. If you don’t have a good relationship with your own father, now’s the time to start mending fences.
