Solo Mother

Truth

I heart Indexed. It’s right up there with xkcd as my all-time favorite, geek-humor site. I might be a single mother, but that doesn’t mean I’ve lost my sense of humor… it just means it’s gotten a little more warped over the years.
I came across an image on Indexed that is sure to make sense […]

A view from the other side

This Single Parent Dad blog is a great read. If ever you want another perspective on life and loss, hop on over and see what he’s got posted for you.
It’s funny how folks make assumptions and rarely wonder if they’re right. I once helped a friend sell his house, sitting with him the whole weekend […]

Red hot angries

I don’t know how to manage an older child’s anger. I haven’t been there yet. But I have a hot-headed five year old full of opinions and attitude, and I worry about him. He’s an exuberant child. He’s got imagination spilling out of him in hot lava gobs of paleontology and space travel and good […]

Single mom tries public humiliation parenting

Christina Wilcox, a single mother in Omaha, Nebraska, put her kids on a street corner for over an hour, recently. Each of the three, a teen and two little ones, stood with home made signs proclaiming their crimes for all to see. The oldest held a sign reading, “I’ll never have a girlfriend. I can’t […]

Time heals all wounds. Love heals all behavior, it seems

I had so much to write about today… all these wonderful new women popping in to add their names to the random drawing for a fun, sexy dance instruction DVD… tag’s been banned in schools but with sensitivity training and reeducation on the playground, kids might be allowed to run amok again…
but what has struck […]

Creativity is so important, single mothers…

Yeah, it’s important for everyone, but especially for us parents who do twice the work with half the hands. I can only hope my kid grows up to think as far outside the box as Improv Everywhere: We cause scenes.
Their latest scene involves three ‘operatives’ schlepping their desktop computers — tower, monitor, the whole deal […]

More great ideas for how to handle 2008

The single parents channel on About.com has some great advice on how to make 2008 a great year. The list of ten things to do and keep in mind really bring home what it means to be a good parent.
Each suggestion is just… great. I’m in love with #10, personally:
10. Embrace Your Life
Finally, recognize […]

How to be a perfect parent

Don’t we all beat ourselves up? Don’t we wring our mental hands over instances when we could have been more patient, more attentive, more giving with our children? Aren’t you sick of being less than perfect?
I sure am…

The right way to praise a child

I’m getting to the bottom of our troubles with the King of Everything. It’s a combination of things, beginning with an innocent, but ultimately detrimental, tendency to praise his intelligence and ending with the fact that he’s just not interested in everything he is supposed to be doing at school.
I know what to do […]

My son, the class clown

I’m so dismayed.
He’s off his rocker. Today he hit a girl in his class because he didn’t want to share the monkey bars with her. A few days ago, he knocked the same girl’s lunch tray into her lap. He says she teases him and tells him potty jokes. I say I don’t care.
