Nebraska’s Safe Haven law

I’m not here to judge the parents who are leaving their tweens and teens at hospitals in Nebraska. I can’t imagine how bad it must have gotten in their homes, that they would leave their kids like that. I read the story about the adoptive mom whose child’s problems were too much for her to […]

Red hot angries

I don’t know how to manage an older child’s anger. I haven’t been there yet. But I have a hot-headed five year old full of opinions and attitude, and I worry about him. He’s an exuberant child. He’s got imagination spilling out of him in hot lava gobs of paleontology and space travel and good […]

Single mom tries public humiliation parenting

Christina Wilcox, a single mother in Omaha, Nebraska, put her kids on a street corner for over an hour, recently. Each of the three, a teen and two little ones, stood with home made signs proclaiming their crimes for all to see. The oldest held a sign reading, “I’ll never have a girlfriend. I can’t […]

Even I’d throw a temper tantrum if I thought it would help

The KoE is whiny mush by the time 7PM comes around, but the family wanted to represent at the PTA meeting tonight, and the older grades were demonstrating the games they developed for the Sally Ride toy competition, and the KoE was abuzz and agog at the idea of Staying Up Late! Playing with the […]

How to be a perfect parent

Don’t we all beat ourselves up? Don’t we wring our mental hands over instances when we could have been more patient, more attentive, more giving with our children? Aren’t you sick of being less than perfect?
I sure am…

What I did when my kid didn’t fit in…

I didn’t comment on all your wonderful notes regarding the King of Everything’s difficulties at school, mostly because I was so overwhelmed by the depth of information and the breadth of compassion you have all shown for that lovely little creature who shares my life.
Thank you.

Positive parenting

I think we’ve all read a story or two about a single mother of a teenaged child who is out of control. With a kid who stands 3′8″ in his stockinged feet at four and a half years old, you best believe I’m interested in how to lay the foundations of a strong relationship between […]

Worst. Mother. Ever.

Apparently, that’s my title this week. The King of Everything is the most drama-ridden not-even-14 year old who ever rode in on the Pre-K Express, and it’s all my fault. Or it’s his grammy’s fault. Or it’s his Grandpa’s fault. I could play pop psychologist and surmise that he’s angry and sad and hurt that […]

Teaching your child consequences

I often read about single mothers who have somehow ‘lost control’ of their children–their sons, in particular. My kid’s only four, and I hope his father will be an active part of his life as he grows up. I have also gone to great lengths to be sure that there are kind and caring men […]
