The Daddy track: here comes equality

by christina on July 10th, 2007

A recent article, The Daddy Track, in the Boston Globe had me thinking. Apparently, 20% of single households in the US are headed by men. What struck me most about the fathers profiled in the story was the sacrifices these men were willing to make, in career, time, and lifestyle, to be there for their kids when the kids needed them most.

As a corollary, more failed relationships are working out creative, and more equitable, custody sharing.

Go ahead and read it, ladies, and nod along with me as more and more men discover what it means to be the primary parent in a household.

Sing it, Aretha!

I haven’t read the article, but the first thing that struck me when reading yours was to wonder why the same men didn’t make these Hurculean sacrifices to do what their family needed when the wife was AROUND. Seems that work and time issues kill a lot of marriages — and while I am glad the dads in the articles are coming through for their kids — might be nice if the family unit had stayed together because they were there for the kids AND the Mrs.

I can’t help but agree with Amy. The guys highlighted are doing all of the same things that single moms do; could they have done some of these things before the divorce? It still often feels like dads are congratulated for being part of their kids’ lives, yet it is just expected of the moms.

Though I’d be interested in meeting some of these guys who are trying to do it all! :)

Yes, you are both right. I think I smell a rant coming on.
