Solo Mother

The single mother’s guide to fitness

heart shaed lollies from Hammond Candies

It has taken me nearly four years to stop finishing my son’s meals. Disgusting. Weird. Blech. What was I thinking, eating his leftovers? And I just threw away the last of the Halloween candy. He doesn’t need it and neither do I.

I joined a gym. I didn’t have the time to go, what with the Job That Ate New York. I signed up for a personal trainer, with the same results. I own lovely belly dance DVD’s but honestly, it’s no fun to do that stuff by yourself–too much like exercise.

I’m going to try something else, now. The part that really kicked my butt with the personal trainer was the exercise ball. They come in different sizes; I’m 5′4″ and the trainer recommended the 55 cm ball, if that helps any of you figure out which size you need. Sit ups, crunches, all sorts of painful, challenging things were done to me, and by me, on that ball. I could even begin to fantasize about having abs again some day.

So today I saw some sort of package at the bookstore with a DVD, these funky resistance bands that you can hook up to the ball, and the right kind of exercise ball. Apparently, I can even get a cardio workout! So this weekend, I’m going to finally clean up my room and get the space I need to work out. If I can keep the kid from playing with the damned ball all the time. It’s not a toy, kid.

And since dancing by yourself just isn’t as much fun as with a partner, I have committed to tango lessons. Oh, MAN are they a workout! But so much fun. By the middle of the class, we had all taken off our sweaters and had the front door propped open to let some of that freezing cold air back in. I can’t remember the last time I had such a good time.

I think I’m going to need some space. Look out, world, here I come!

Wow, it really sounds like you’re on your way! And you’ve got the key element, it needs to be fun!

I really need to get some sort of excersising done. I still weigh what I did when I was 9 months pregnant, lol.

And those balls are a bugger to keep away from kiddies! I got one for me in labour, and I’ve not had a chance to get near it since then, as wee fellow always wants to play with it, lol.

And here I am, a week later, and still haven’t blown up the exercise ball.

    RATS!!
