Solo Mother

Time heals all wounds. Love heals all behavior, it seems

by christina on April 25th, 2008

I had so much to write about today… all these wonderful new women popping in to add their names to the random drawing for a fun, sexy dance instruction DVD… tag’s been banned in schools but with sensitivity training and reeducation on the playground, kids might be allowed to run amok again…

but what has struck me most today is this warm, amazing glow I’ve had all day because the Kid’s alright.

It took him three weeks to get his equilibrium back from the perfect storm of spring break, birthday, and a last-minute visit from his father. I’ve been away from him for two days due to work (GALA! MEDIA! IMPORTANT PEOPLE! OH MY!) and this morning, he climbed into my big bed, his blue eyes laughing, his smile clear and uncomplicated. He’s back. His pre-K teacher was out of the classroom yesterday and so she left him detailed instructions on how to turn on the class computers. Him. The King of Everything. With a Very. Important. Job. He was in heaven. His arms are shooting out of his PJ tops, his ankles out of the bottoms, and heaven knows when his father will pay the nearly five months of back child support so we can buy him new ones. Food prices are getting scary. World news makes my hair stand on end. But in our small corner of the world, everything’s alright. The Kid is happy. He is well-behaved. He is a sunny side up son and I am again the luckiest mama in the whole world.

When your kids are going through something, there are things you can do to help him or her through the rough spots. When your children are at their prickliest, don’t push them away. Gather them closer. Listen harder. Be more consistent. Carve out time for them. Set goals as a family and be sure every family member — friends who are family count! — are on the same page when it comes to being there for a young one going through a rough patch. My parents and I even convened a special lunch to discuss what we could be doing to better for him, and look.

He’s back.
