What are your holiday traditions?

by christina on December 20th, 2007

For some reason, it seems as though Thanksgiving came too soon this year, and has thrown us all off for Christmas. Everything has been too soon… the Handel’s Messiah Sing-Along at the Kennedy Center was on the first weekend of December, as was the Christmas Revels. We’ve already been to see the winter display at the National Botanic Gardens, and drove past the National Christmas Tree of Peace tonight. The city has been lit up with holiday lights since November 1st it seems, and I put off getting a tree until last weekend just so I wouldn’t have to sweep up dead needles for any longer than absolutely possible.

The KoE is home this year, so I’m thrilled to be able to share all the things that make this time of year so special.

What are your traditions? On Christmas Eve, we…

…go to my parents’ house for dinner (I’ll try to make a Buche de Noel) and exchange our gifts there. It’s a lovely, low-key evening. This year, I’ll have to find a way to haul all of his father’s family’s presents over to my parents’ house, because they will call him at midnight their time to wish him a merry Christmas and talk to him as he opens their gifts. When we return to our little house, we’ll put out milk and cookies for Santa, and we have made special, little sugar cookies for Santa’s reindeer, too.

I’ll spend the night after the boy goes to sleep assembling toys and listening to carols, relaxing by the light of the Christmas tree all by my lonesome. Whenever my little elf wakes up on Christmas morning (o please, don’t let it be 5AM!) we’ll open my presents to him, and play with everything. My folks might come over for brunch, or they might just keep a nice, quiet day to themselves.

I think we’ll try something new this year and go in the afternoon to visit a friend who is burning a Yule Log. I’m looking forward to joining this crazy tribe.

So you see, nothing intricate, nothing incredible. A nice, low-key holiday.

How do you celebrate the season? What do you do when it’s not your turn with the kids?
