what do you think, single moms? Naughty, or nice?
Apparently, there’s a single mom artist out there who thinks women can be naughty AND nice.
Vancouver artist Katherine Laflamme thinks moms can have it all, and has created a series of paintings, Pin-Up Moms, that challenge the way we view motherhood, womanhood, and washing the car.
Cheryl Rossi of the Vancouver Courier wrote a piece about the artist… but I think the thrust of the article completely misses the point.
Each of the images offers women, very obviously mothers, up as sexual beings, right there with their children. Three of the four works were purchased by men. I’m okay with that… what makes me squirm is the combination of sexy + children present. For example, there’s a ride ‘em cowboys type of scene, with a very voluptuous woman on the back of a rocking horse, her child riding in front of her. It makes me uncomfortable, and I’m trying to figure out why.
I’m not uncomfortable with sexuality. I don’t mind being sexy. When my son sees me dressed up for a night out, I don’t try to dumb my looks down for him, and it’s sweet of him to smile and say, “Wow, mama, you look pretty!” But I don’t sexpot myself out. I know the artist is trying to show that mothers are sexy, but… I’m having a hard time with the imagery.
I dunno. Take a look at her work and tell me what you think… am I a prude?

I’m kind of on the fence with this one. I like what she’s trying to say, but I’m a little uncomfortable with the kids being present too. It would be a lot worse if they were photographs and not drawings, though. I think most of them are tastefully done, but the horse one is creepy.

Women can absolutely be both sexy and sweet! I have a number of former girlfriends who had that combination down pat. And some were single moms.
As for the art - I’m like you, uncomfortable with the kid in the picture. If I’m going to ravish a single mom, I’ll do so when the kids are not in the room.

Other than the horse one, I really dont have a problem with them. If the women were making out with a man with a kid latched onto a boob…Then I would have a problem. I guess I have the thought of..if you have it flaunt it, but with taste. I just feel these are tastefully done.

the horse one is a bit disturbing.
but the one with the mom on the laptop nursing, I like.
I looked her up on facebook to see the rest. the cake is disturbing as well…. not so sure about the changing diaper one…
