When you wan to make big changes, take small steps…

by christina on May 2nd, 2007

I still haven’t been to the gym. Work is nuts right now, and I’m doing the work of two. There aren’t enough hours in a day. Perhaps I’ll get to the gym on Sunday as a break from work. Yes. Work.

Besides, I’m scared of the gym. I’m afraid of exercise. It’s going to hurt. I’m so far from what I once was that I don’t know how to begin. Looking at it from that perspective–the wrong end of the telescope, perhaps, which makes everything look so far away and impossible–wasn’t giving me anything but anxiety. Instead, I took a good look at what I was eating and have made a few, small changes.

IMG 0114What I was eating: sugar, sausage, crackers, cheese.

What I’m eating now: salad, raw vegetables, fish, chicken, fresh and frozen fruits, more salad, sushi, and a little bit of chocolate. It’s a vast improvement. Next, I’m going to try to tackle that chocolate binge, and bring it down to a few squares of utterly delicious chocolate on special occasions. When I’m very honest with myself, I realize that sugar makes me feel sick, exhausted, and drained. I’m going to be sure to eat salad for at least one of my meals every day, if not two. I ordered two of everything in the salad accoutrements for my last grocery run, and brought half to the office. Cheap and easy.

Whenever you feel yourself overwhelmed by what might seem to be Herculean tasks, break them down into their smaller, component parts. Makes it much easier to move a mountain one teaspoon at a time, instead of trying to shove the whole thing out of your way in one fell swoop.

I like really complex salads so I chop enough stuff for about 3 days worth, but I leave out the lettuce and dressing (and the cheese and turkey if I am going for a meal salad), adding those just before I eat it. For the stuff I like, it seems to keep really well this way. I do NOT have time to chop all the stuff for a salad every day.

And try to find a healthy dessing you like. You can really ruin a healthy salad with dressing. I am frightened by how many calories are in dressing. I like Bernsteins Light Cheese Italiano or something like that, mixed with basalmic vinegar - very low cal and tasty!
