Solo Mother

wise words from a very wise, former single mother

by christina on March 2nd, 2008

I don’t talk very often about the fact that my mom was a single mother for a while, back when I was a little thing. She was a waitress, and I’d spend the nights with Nanna and Herbert, and the days running around with my wonderful mom. I remember being scared of construction sites (I thought the cranes were gigantic monsters), I remember saying, “I’d like some sherbert, Herbert!” and shrieking hysterically about fifty bajillion times an evening. I remember going on adventures with my mom. She was always there and she was all I needed. When she found my current dad, he adopted us, and we adopted him, and my life has been pretty darned complete ever since then. There is no alternate definition… no ’step dad’ no reference to my biodad, there’s only my father, the man who loved me and raised me. There is my mother, the world’s best grammie EVER, and I’ve got the tee shirt to prove it.

I bring all this up because I had some pretty amazing conversations today, conversations that helped me to see I made the right choices. And a conversation with my wonderful mom that brought it all home.

You see, I still can’t quite wrap my head around the amount of self I sacrificed to survive my marriage. I’m so grateful that there was enough of me left to rebuild my heart, my hope, and my life. As my mom put it, she thinks that those of us who have survived such bad times and came out of it with something so wonderful as a bright, amazing child? we had something to live for, something to survive for, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks for sharing this link. I went on it, read parts and bits of it and then decided to contact the author. To my surprise, he answered me right away and seemed like a very friendly person.
